President Carter’s former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinsky
says president-elect Barack Obama may be tested by terrorists after he takes office
on Jan. 20. Speaking to Deutsche Welle, he pointed out that at least two US presidents
were tested early in office – the two World Trade Center attacks occurred
in the first year of Bill Clinton’s and George W. Bush’s presidencies.
Brzezinsky added that changing the substance of US policies is not as easy
as it sounds and Obama may be incapable of bringing “dramatic change”
to Washington.
Under a secret order, the Bush administration carried out strikes in 5 to 20
countries, including Syria, Pakistan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and other Persian
Gulf states, where al-Qaeda militants were believed to be operating or to have
sought sanctuary, a senior administration official told the New York Times.
No raids were made into Iran, only reconnaissance missions under different directives.
A dozen additional missions were scrapped as too dangerous, diplomatically
problematic or relied on insufficient evidence
