- What the mainstream media are giving us is elevator news. Recently, I encountered the term "WPN" (for "what passes for news"). I'd like to propose a related term, "Nuzak." - Is that a bit of desperation coming from Bill O'Reilly? His show's lost a third of its viewers over the past few months and now he won't shut up about celebrities who refuse to put their heads on his chopping block of a show. - A third federal agency has admitted it paid a journalist to write favorable stories about its work. Documents released by the Agriculture Department show it paid a freelance writer $9,375 in 2003 to "research and write articles for hunting and fishing magazines describing the benefits of NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) programs."
- Make an assertion, promote your opinion, or provide your interpretation. Before your opponent can question your motive, strength of argument, or basis for your assertions, call for them to prove you wrong. Place the burden of proof for your assumptions on your opponent.

- Press Secretary Scott McClellan officially confirmed that the White House is blowing off the Government Accountability Office's finding that prepackaged administration video news releases constitute illegal covert propaganda. - Judicial Watch has filed a lawsuit in seeking records from the Department of Defense concerning Pentagon funded programs engaged in "strategic influence, perception management, strategic information warfare and/or strategic psychological operations" through media consultants, "think tanks," foreign expatriate political organizations
and Internet sites.
- "Thank you, Bush. Thank you, U.S.A.," a jubilant Iraqi-American told a camera crew in Kansas City for a segment about reaction to the fall of Baghdad. A second report told of "another success" in the Bush administration's "drive to strengthen aviation security"; the reporter called it "one of the most remarkable campaigns in aviation history." A third segment, broadcast in January, described the administration's determination to open markets for American farmers. To a viewer, each report looked like any other 90-second segment on the local news. In fact, the federal government produced all three.

- The existence of Jeff Gannon, the propagandist impersonating a reporter is disturbing. However what is even more disturbing is that he is not the first but the sixth "journalist" (four of whom have been unmasked so far this year) to have been a propagandist on the payroll of either the Bush administration or a barely arms-length ally like Talon News, while simultaneously appearing in print or broadcast forums that purport to be real news
- For two years Jeff Gannon cut an unobtrusive figure at White House press conferences. He was writing under a false name and working for a Republican front organisation. His 'softball' questions to White House officials can now be seen as plotting by an administration which has frequently displayed a dark mastery of the arts of press control. - His real name is James Dale Guckert. He has no journalistic background whatsoever. His application for a press credential to cover the Congress was rejected. But the White House arranged for him to be given a new pass every single day, a deliberate evasion of the regular credentialing that requires an FBI security check. It was soon revealed. "Gannon" owned and advertised his services as a gay escort on more than half a dozen websites.

- In 2002, syndicated columnist Maggie Gallagher repeatedly defended President Bush's push for a $300 million initiative encouraging marriage as a way of strengthening families. Unbeknownst to us, this "independent reporter" had several contracts with the US Government and was being payed thousands of dollars.
